This blog post is based on a synopsis from a recent Ed Leadership Edge podcast interview with Joey Adame, superintendent of Los Molinos Unified School District in Chico, California.
In the heart of California’s agricultural region, Los Molinos Unified School District is making waves with its innovative approach to education. Under the leadership of Superintendent Joey Adame, the district has transformed its Career Technical Education (CTE) program, earning recognition and awards along the way.
When Adame arrived in 2017, he found the CTE pathways needed restructuring. The district realigned courses, adding new pathways in computer science, animal science, and early childhood development. A state-of-the-art welding facility was implemented, and the culinary arts program expanded to include a unique catering business run by students.
These efforts paid off in 2019 when Los Molinos received two prestigious awards: an exemplary district for CTE implementation and a distinguished high school recognition. The district’s success stems from its commitment to preparing students for real-world challenges, whether they choose university, trade school, or direct entry into the workforce.
Adame’s personal background as a child of immigrant farmworkers informs his approach to education. He understands the importance of providing opportunities for all students, especially those facing language barriers or economic challenges. With a student population that is 68% Latino and 26% English learners, the district focuses on providing industry certifications alongside traditional diplomas, ensuring that even students with limited English proficiency can secure employment upon graduation.
The district’s approach to education goes beyond academic achievement. Recognizing the impact of COVID-19 on students’ mental health, Los Molinos has implemented a comprehensive positive behavioral intervention system. They’ve hired a school social worker and introduced mentoring programs to support students’ social-emotional well-being.
For immigrant parents, the district provides translated documents and creates venues for engagement, such as English language advisory committees. Adame, being bilingual, personally reaches out to Spanish-speaking parents to ensure they feel comfortable and connected to the school community.
Looking to the future, Los Molinos is cautiously exploring the potential of AI in education. While recognizing its benefits for instruction and resource access, they’re also addressing concerns about plagiarism and the need for a comprehensive understanding of AI platforms.
The district is also making strides in computer programming education, partnering with UC Davis for their CSTEM robotics program. Adame believes that early exposure to computer programming will give students a significant advantage in the increasingly tech-driven job market.
Los Molinos Unified’s success story exemplifies the power of innovative thinking in education. By focusing on career readiness, embracing technology, and addressing the holistic needs of students, the district is preparing its diverse student body for success in an ever-changing world. As education continues to evolve, Los Molinos stands as a model for how small districts can make a big impact on students’ lives and futures.
