The Future is Ours: Gen Z Journalists Speak Out is a 35-minute documentary that highlights young people’s perspectives on the issues of today.

Gen Z is the first digitally native generation. Born in a world where information has never been more accessible, they’re uniquely aware of today’s most pressing problems. In many ways, however, they’re not given a seat at the table. So what are the hopes, concerns, and perspectives of these young people, many of whom will be voting for the first time this year?

With the 2024 presidential election just around the corner, The Future is Ours showcases the varying viewpoints of a cross-section of high school journalists—their generation’s interpreters.

Climate change, school shootings, and devastating wars are just some of the issues Gen Z will soon inherit, but viewers might be surprised to learn how informed and passionate today’s young people are. Though they’re not always the easiest topics to discuss, The Future is Ours brings to the forefront conversations the American people need to be hearing and having.

For Teachers: The Future is Ours is a great way to spark civic conversation in your class. Below, you will find a free five-day civic discourse lesson plan (for 9th-12th grade) to accompany the documentary. It includes a discussion prep sheet for facilitating difficult but important conversations with your students, as well as an activity map to aid students in exploring and reflecting on issues they care about.
