Journalistic Learning Initiative (JLI) Launches Pathfinder: A Free Generative AI Writing Coach to Inspire Solutions Journalism Reporting for Secondary Students

Eugene, OR — April 17, 2024— The Journalistic Learning Initiative (JLI) proudly announces the release of Pathfinder, a revolutionary generative AI writing coach designed to empower middle and high school students to engage in Solutions Journalism reporting. Informed by the principles of Solutions Journalism, Pathfinder encourages students to identify and report on concerns in their communities while exploring potential solutions. A Pro version is also available free for adult users.

Solutions Journalism, as advocated by the Solutions Journalism Network (SJN) (http:// solutionsjournalism.org), emphasizes rigorous reporting on responses to social issues, providing readers with insights into effective approaches to addressing problems. Pathfinder embodies these principles, guiding students through the process of identifying issues in their communities and exploring potential solutions through balanced and evidence-based reporting.

As part of JLI’s commitment to fostering ethical journalism and empowering the next generation of journalists, Pathfinder is available free of charge to middle and high school students worldwide. By providing students with the tools and resources needed to engage in Solutions Journalism reporting, JLI aims to inspire a new generation of socially conscious and civically engaged citizens.

“We are thrilled to launch Pathfinder as part of our ongoing efforts to empower students to make a positive impact in their communities through journalism,” said Ed Madison, executive director at JLI. “By integrating the principles of Solutions Journalism into our AI writing coach, we hope to inspire students to explore innovative solutions to the challenges facing their communities.”

Pathfinder offers a user-friendly interface and intuitive workflow, making it accessible to students with varying levels of experience in journalism. Through guided prompts and feedback, students are encouraged to critically analyze issues, seek out diverse perspectives, and propose evidence-based solutions in their reporting.

In addition to Pathfinder, JLI offers a range of educational resources, including workshops, lesson plans, and mentorship programs, to support student learning. JLI aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to become informed and engaged citizens.
