Fellowship Applications Now Open for Effective Communicators Course

Rural Oregon teachers can now apply for training to lead the Journalistic Learning Initiative’s Effective Communicators course. Selected teachers receive a $500 stipend with a portion eligible toward a graduate credit (and professional development units) through the University of Oregon, thanks to a partnership with Northwest retailer Bi-Mart. Fellowship applications are due August 31, 2021.

Effective Communicators is a 45-day, standards-aligned course that can be taught inside existing English Language Arts classes, or as a stand-alone elective. Teachers do not need journalism experience.

Teacher finalists will be interviewed during September, with 20 fellows announced October 1. Fellows agree to complete eight hours of online teacher training modules during the month of October, plus attend a live webinar, but may implement the 45-day course at any time during the school year.

The Effective Communicators course covers:

*Building Character—Defining and designing who students will be in the world;

*Media Literacy—Interpreting and understanding media influences;

*Information Gathering—Distinguishing evidence-based media from opinion and advocacy;

*Interview Skills—How to cultivate listening, develop rapport, and ask deeper questions;

*Speaking to Communicate—Understanding the power of language and persuasion;

*Writing with Clarity—Concise writing for a target audience;

*Social Media—Boundary setting and responsible use;

*Publishing—Sharing your discoveries with authentic audiences;

A key focus of the course is building character and supporting students in developing resiliency following what was for many students a disrupted year of academics due to the pandemic.

“We’re excited to play a role in exposing deserving students to the skills that will help build a foundation for further learning, as well as set them up for success in whatever direction their lives take,” said Bi-Mart Vice President of Advertising and Marketing Don Leber. “We hope the educators and students who participate in Effective Communicators will experience the benefits of this program for years to come.”
