From Drones to AI: How Technology Centers Are Transforming Student Learning

In the heart of Whitehall, Wisconsin, a small school district is redefining education. Spearheaded by Superintendent Mike Beighley, the Whitehall School District is transforming how students are prepared for the future through a state-of-the-art technology center. This hub immerses students in cutting-edge fields like robotics, autonomous vehicles, and 3D printing, all driven by a bold philosophy of innovation.

Mike Beighley’s journey began in 2017 with a deep dive into global best practices. Motivated by a desire to understand how schools could better prepare students for a rapidly changing world, he embarked on an 11-day trip to Germany. There, he visited a range of schools, from vocational training centers to high-tech innovation hubs, to study how education systems address modern challenges. This trip, combined with subsequent visits to 80 to 90 schools and institutions across the United States over the next five years, provided a wealth of insights. Supported by a partnership with the Ron and Joyce Wanick Foundation, Beighley discovered a universal truth: schools aren’t broken, but the world has changed, demanding a fresh approach to education.

“Our traditional methods of educating kids were meant for a different time,” Beighley explained. “The world has shifted, and so have its expectations. We need to do a better job of identifying individual strengths and fostering creativity. Schools perform exceptionally well, but our targets have changed, and we need to modify our approach.”

A Student-Centered Environment

Walking into Whitehall’s emerging technology center, visitors would see a dynamic, bustling environment. Students work independently or in small groups, guided by mentors rather than tethered to traditional teacher-led instruction. “We’ve removed artificial limits and focused on mastery,” Beighley said. “Our instructors mentor students based on their individual needs, which allows them to move at their own pace and explore their full potential.”

This philosophy is evident in the center’s offerings. From drones and VEX robotics to computer science and soon quantum computing, the center is a hub of exploration. Beighley emphasized the importance of allowing students to take charge of their learning. “We’ve moved away from minimal compliance and toward maximizing human capacity. It’s about preparing kids for the future they’re going to live in, not the past we grew up in.”

Building a Collaborative Network

Whitehall’s efforts extend beyond its borders. The district is part of the Trempealeau Valley Cooperative, a partnership with three neighboring school districts. This collaboration allows students to access specialized classes and resources across schools. “It’s not efficient for every district to build its own technology lab,” Beighley noted. “By working together, we can offer students a globally competitive environment.”

The cooperative model also supports students’ varied interests, ensuring access to opportunities that might otherwise be unavailable in a small rural district. Beighley sees this as a blueprint for addressing the challenges facing public education in similar communities. “We’re proving that by pooling resources and focusing on what’s best for kids, we can thrive together.”

Embracing Technology, Doubling Down on Humanity

One of the most exciting aspects of Whitehall’s approach is its integration of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality, and virtual reality. “We’re leveraging tools to automate certain educational processes,” Beighley explained. “This frees up educators to focus on mentoring students and fostering their individual strengths.”

The district’s pilot program in eighth-grade math has already shown promising results. Using an independent learning tool tied to the existing curriculum, students are advancing at unprecedented rates. “Some kids have completed and validated all their eighth-grade math within six weeks,” Beighley said. “This proves how much we’ve been unintentionally limiting our students.”

But technology is only part of the equation. Beighley stressed the importance of balancing innovation with humanity. “We’re doubling down on the human side of education. It’s not just about what kids learn, but how they’re supported and mentored to reach their full potential.”

A Vision for the Future

Beighley’s work is rooted in a profound belief in the value of public education. “When we have more grandparents than grandchildren for the first time in history, we need to ask: What happens if we don’t provide high-quality education for every child? We can’t survive, let alone thrive.”

He acknowledges that public schools have been resistant to change but sees this as an opportunity for growth. “It’s not about bad intentions. We just don’t know what we don’t know. That’s why partnerships with businesses and foundations are so important. They can help educators see what’s possible.”

Beighley’s passion for education is evident in his call to action. “We need to share our successes and show what’s possible in public education. By focusing on maximizing the potential of every student, we can ensure a brighter future for all.”
