Social media has become an almost inescapable part of everyday life. This is especially true for young people who average more than four hours a day on social media platforms. As social media use has been linked to anxiety and depression, there’s never been a greater need for young people to cultivate social media mindfulness. JLI’s Teaching Social Media Mindfulness instructional plan equips students with the skills they need to regulate their social media habits and defend against harmful and misleading content.

Lesson Plan Overview

While there are five lesson plans in Teaching Social Media Mindfulness, they do not have to be taught in five consecutive days. The lessons cover topics related to mindfulness, social media, and mental health and meet several ELA College & Career Readiness Anchor Standards.

Day 1: Introduction to Social Media Mindfulness
This lesson introduces students to the concept of social media mindfulness and sets a foundation for understanding the effect of social media habits.
Day 2: Social Media and Mental Health
This lesson provides an opportunity for students to think about the impact that social media can have on one’s mental health.
Day 3: Evaluating Social Media Claims
In this lesson, students will learn strategies for evaluating the credibility of claims made on social media platforms.
Day 4: Social Media Boundaries
The goal of this lesson is to have students reflect on teen social media usage and its impacts, as well as research principles of healthy digital citizenship, and brainstorm ways to apply them.
Day 5: Examining Social Media Through a Literary Lens
This lesson prompts students to critically examine and reflect on how crafting identities on social media can negatively impact mental health versus portraying authentic selves.
