“If you have the courage to say, “I’m going to let you guys decide how you’re going to lay out your path,” that’s the trick.  [Students will] do amazing things. It doesn’t really matter what age group they’re in or where they come from. They are at the age where they’re full of creative potential if you let them unlock it. The amount of work it takes to teach them how to do an interview and write up some basic structures for stories and just lay things out in InDesign is really pretty minimal. Once they get excited, they start running from there.”

“The number one thing I teach is that before [a student asks me] a question to ask one of their peers and see whether they can help before I have to step in. It makes everybody into an expert. They respect each other, and they learn together. These are thinking skills that belong in every high school in this country.”

“It’s really good hearing as a writing teacher, ‘We just want to write, give us stuff to write about!’ I’ve never heard that before. Usually it’s ‘Oh my gosh, how long do you want us to write for? How many paragraphs?’ But with JLI I’m not getting any of that. I think it’s because we’re allowing the kids to design and take their learning to where they want it to go.”

“Coming in here told me that I’m not defined by a letter . . . that the work that I do will speak louder than the grade I receive.
