Connecting Classrooms with Communities

In traditional education systems, learning often takes place in a vacuum. At every step of the journalistic journey, students bridge the gap between school and the real world by connecting with their community in meaningful ways. They choose an issue unfolding in their community to investigate, research and interview local experts on the matter, and publish their findings for their community to see, allowing them to reflect on how their voices are making an impact.

WHY JOIN?

Lead media literacy instruction with confidence

While 21 states now require some form of media literacy instruction, teachers lack support, proper resources, and up-to-date curriculum. The JLC prepares members to lead civic media literacy instruction with confidence and supplies them with comprehensive, standards-aligned lesson plans that prepare students for success in the digital age.

Incorporate journalism into your curriculum

Scholastic journalism programs are dwindling. Teachers are looking for ways to bring them back because they provide students with invaluable learning opportunities and connect classrooms with communities. JLC’s resources and network of educators will help you prepare to bring journalism back into your school through Journalistic Learning—no journalism experience required!

Connect with support systems to teach in tough times

Teachers today feel over-scrutinized and under-supported. Join our community to connect and grow with a supportive network of educators, receive guidance from our veteran program director, and access a library of resources, including our comprehensive, project-based curriculum that’s backed by researchers of the University of Oregon.
